Mr. Brown and the Bar Harbour Market

A friend and I took a Friday afternoon to explore Hout Bay during my first week in Cape Town. We walked along the harborside admiring the dozens of sailboats and fishing vessels. The crystal clear water was a marvelous shade of turquoise, but slowly changed to reflect the rosy hues of the peninsular sunset.

As we were venturing onto the pier, a fisherman in a bright yellow shirt and baseball cap called for our attention to see "Mr. Brown." Our eyes widening like waxing moons, we continued walking down the dock. The man kept shouting and waving for passersby to see this Mr. Brown. After an older couple made their way over and their laughter echoed from the mountains, my friend and I decided to see what was happening. As it turns out, the man had developed a remarkable relationship with one of the wild seals he calls, "Mr. Brown." He told us that if he had sardines, he would have shown us feeding the seal from his own mouth. We were skeptical of the situation, but continued on our way to the Bay Harbour Market. Held on the weekends, the market features food stalls from local restaurants and chefs and artisans proudly display their handiwork. Young artists played live music on a small stage as we sang along to Corinne Bailey Rae's "Put Your Records On" and feasted on sandwiches of epic proportions!

Later that night, I found the fisherman feeding Mr. Brown on YouTube!
